Days in theater: 178

And it has been a long 178 days also. We have been awfully busy the last couple of weeks so I guess that's why my postings have been short and practically non-existant. For that I apologize. I'm sure no one wants to hear about lateral transfers, hand receipts, and inventories. However, the big inventory I did downrange was awesome. But you heard most of the story; to which I will finish at some other time. Most likely when I'm home on leave safe and sound.

Today was another mission of a different sort. I was planning on sleeping in but was stirred awake at 0830 and informed I had a mission in 20 minutes and to be at the staging area immediately. Everyone knows that I am not a morning person, by far, so I'm sure I wasn't the easiest to work with this morning. The colonel made a few mentions to it on our trip.

We went out to a local high school and handed out school supplies. All joy and fun. The best part is that today was the last day of school in Kabul because they close for three months during the winter. Yeah, I know. Crazy. So we handed out school supplies to kids who aren't going to be going to school for three months. The school's owner told us, "Well, this way they can study during the break."

Of course we all know that means, "The kids are going to burn the paper for heat and use the pencils to stir it." The government a few years ago put actual desks in the classrooms for kids to work on until the first winter all the teachers let the kids take the wood home to burn. Now they use steel tables.

I always enjoy going out on missions though and having rocks thrown at me. This time it was giant mud clods, but thankfully I had my high speed protective gear on. The shots to the face, however, are hard to avoid.

For those of you who didn't know, SGT Dub and myself are back to going to the gym under mandatory conditions for being overweight. I am currently 18 pounds overweight, but only 1% body fat over. I don't know about SGT Dub. In the last week, I have lost 6 pounds though so hopefully I won't be on the fat boy program in January. I would hate to enjoy my last month here in the gym.

Well, by last month I mean last month before my leave.

That's about all really. I can't discuss the actual workings of my office because that would violate OPSEC so I just leave you with the notion that I have an important job and get things done. Think whatever you may.

It is still cold here, as I'm sure you all can expect. It hasn't snowed in a few weeks, but there is still some snow on the ground from our blizzard a while ago. KBR still sucks (Dena, I'm glad you share my pain) and they keep whining more and more everyday. I had lunch with the general the other day. It was out of the blue, he just sat down next to me. We chatted about this and that and meeting this and mission that. I still don't see what all the fuss is about this one man. He's just a man like me so someone please explain why everywhere he goes there is practically a red carpet and cameras taking pictures. This I will never understand.

I'm sure my captain is getting more annoyed with me as the days go on. I tend to pipe up my opinion more than any other specialists around here. Maybe its good; maybe its bad. I don't know. All I do is tell everyone when I see something ate up and in need of fixing. Apparently that's not part of my job though.

I was told the other day that I am the highest ranking specialist around camp. Like I said, I'm just trying to square away what I can square away. I am not afraid to toss in my two cents, drop a dime here or there, or voice my mind. Do I do any good? I don't know. Do I appear to complain an extreme amount? Possibly. Does the office I work in get praised around country for the way we handle business. Yes.

Life is still good, though. I'm 7000 miles away from my wife, family, and friends, but that's just part of what I do. I joined the military to fight for my country and if that means actually doing some fighting and being away from all that I love for awhile, so be it.

I'm over here so my wife can sleep safe in our house. One day I will join her again.

God is good. All the time.
Peace
